Deer Breeding Gets Big Stage

After being practiced in North America for more than century, deer farming and breeding has leapt to the national spotlight and hunters are reaping the benefits of bigger and healthier deer.

With more than 7,000 ranch operations and 2,000 hunting preserves, the deer (aka cervid) industry today has emerged with a strong national presence and many economists believe the deer industry is the fastest growing industry in rural America. Plus, the number of hunters served by the deer breeding market continues to grow and the total economic impact of the cervid industry — combining the farming and hunting components — is now estimated to be more than $3 billion annually.

In fact, the deer industry is so hot right now that it is now getting its own television show on the Outdoor Channel. One of the nation’s most well-known outdoor television producers, Keith Warren recently announced the upcoming debut of an all-new television program, Keith Warren’s Deer & Wildlife Stories, which will begin airing January 2009. Deer & Wildlife Stories will broadcast on the Outdoor Channel and help educate viewers on issues affecting whitetail deer, habitat management and other important topics.

“This is a program about in the future of deer and the rural American lifestyle will find interesting,” says Keith Warren, an outdoor television producer who has appeared on the Outdoor Channel longer than any other host. “Stories will be informative, inspirational and educational in nature as we address a wide variety of issues which effect deer and habitat management.”

Unlike much of today’s outdoor programming, Deer & Wildlife Stories will feature a variety of enlightening ‘deer stories’ that introduces a new point of view regarding preserving our natural resources and the urban way of life. From replanting native habitat to the important role deer farming plays in protecting the integrity and value of whitetail deer, Deer & Wildlife Stories will appeal to everyone who shares an interest in and an affinity for nature.

“Deer breeding is a growing and vital industry in the United States, particularly in the rural communities, and Keith Warren’s new show will help educate millions of hunters, sportsmen and other deer enthusiasts as to what we do,” says Annie Jones, director of operations for the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance. “Over the years, traditional revenue sources have shifted away from the small communities, but deer breeding is creating thousands of new jobs across the country.”
